Benjamin Franklin joked that he didn't want the eagle to be our national bird. He found them a little despicable. Eagles will steal prey that other animals catch (he thought that was laziness, not cunning). Eagles will eat carrion when they can (well below the American ideal). They also don't have the loud, powerful yell that we associate with eagles: they have kind of a weird cackle. Personally, having worked with eagles, I think they're the perfect symbol of America.
