Shigella, the bacteria that causes shigellosis, is a common cause of bacterial diarrhea worldwide and a common cause of "dysentery" on the Oregon Trail (his full name is Shigella dysenteriae). It's often associated with outbreaks in childcare settings and can also spread through contaminated food or water that your settler was probably drinking as they moved west.
